How do you know who to trust and who not to trust?

when you meet a person how do you know whether to trust them or not i have been fooled by so many people and i just can't take it anymore i am starting to deliberately distance myself from anyone new i meet because i am too scared of getting too attached to them like i always do and then end up hurt.
